How to Support Grieving Families If You Cannot Attend a Funeral

Funerals often come unexpectedly, and while many try to make these important events—some may not be able to travel or attend at short notice. In these cases, it is still important to acknowledge the loss of an individual and share support. Expressing condolences during such a difficult time can be a tough process for many, but there are many ways to show support aside from attending a funeral service.

Send Flowers and Cards

Flowers are a beautiful and common way to express sympathies for friends and family who have lost a loved one. After selecting a tasteful arrangement of flowers or plants, it is a good idea to have them delivered to the funeral home or place where the service will occur. If the service has passed, sending them directly to the family’s home is also acceptable. Including a small note or card in addition to an arrangement is also a way to express warm thoughts.

Signing an Online Guestbook

Online guestbooks and memorial sites have become a common way for individuals to express thoughts, support and love after one has passed away. Signing a guestbook can be great way to share your condolences, as loved ones of the deceased will likely look back on these messages time and time again to remember the deceased.

Some memorial sites allow guests to share pictures of the deceased—allowing all to look back on their life with fond memories. Funeral homes often help arrange these services and should be contacted for more information on where to access them.

Visit the Family

Those who live nearby or are close to the family of the deceased may find that if they cannot attend a funeral, it is a good idea to visit the family’s home. Grieving will typically continue long after the service, and it is always nice to help show support during this process. When visiting, it may be helpful to offer home cooked meals, help with cleaning, watch children or simply have a conversation with those in mourning.
