Virginia Rosamond Martin, lovingly known as "Grandmother Midland," was born on April 24, 1947, in Littlefield, Texas. She departed this life unexpectedly at her home on February 4, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and strength. Virginia graduated from Snyder High School in 1965, where she showcased her musical talents by playing various instruments, including the flute, piano, and oboe, as part of the high school band.
Her professional journey began as a bookkeeper for several oil companies, where her meticulous nature and strong work ethic became evident. In 1995, she joined Dick Campbell Construction in Midland, Texas, where she served as his bookkeeper until her retirement in 2021, marking a significant chapter in her life dedicated to hard work and professionalism.
Virginia's personality was a blend of honesty—often to a fault—and strong-willed determination. She was proud of raising her two sons, instilling in them the values of responsibility; if they ever got into trouble at school, home would be no refuge. Virginia took immense pride in her family's military tradition, delighted that both of her sons chose to enlist in the Navy.
Beyond her career, Virginia was a woman of many interests. An avid reader, she particularly cherished her collection of James Patterson novels and took immense pride in her salt and pepper shaker collection. She loved to share stories and photographs of her grandchildren, relishing every moment spent discussing their lives, regardless of how current the pictures may have been.
She was also known for her generous spirit and commitment to community service. Virginia volunteered her time at food banks, with the American Red Cross, and dedicated efforts toward helping Desert Storm Veterans, ensuring that they received the care and attention they deserved. Her selflessness and "servant's heart" were among her proudest accomplishments.
Virginia is survived by her two sons, Ray Duke and his wife Elizabeth from El Paso, Texas, and Jeffery Duke and Chelsea from Reagan, Texas. She also leaves behind her brother Ricky and his wife Tracy Jackson of Midland, Texas, her sister Pat Chandler, four beloved grandchildren—Kellan Duke, Daniela Duke, Alexis Duke, and Olivia Duke—and an unforgettable chihuahua named Princess.
She was preceded in death by her parents, JM Jackson and Georgia Jackson; her husband, Larry Martin; her brother, Frank Jackson; and her sister, Janelle Bourland, and her husband, Elmer Bourland.
A graveside service will be held in her honor on February 8, 2025, at Greathouse Cemetery in Temple, Texas, providing family and friends opportunity to celebrate her remarkable life and to reflect on the cherished memories she created with those she loved.
