Douglas Boyd Shewalter, affectionately known as Doug, was born on December 20, 1939, in Hamilton, Iowa and passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, in Temple, Texas. He lived a life characterized by dedication to family, education, and service to his country.
After graduating high school, Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 4, 1959, in San Antonio, Texas. His commitment to serving his nation saw him stationed at Perrin AFB, Texas, where he served under the command of the 4780th Organizational Maintenance Squadron. Doug reached the rank of E-4, A1C, and was recognized for his service with several honors including the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Award, and the Air Force Expeditionary Medal. He then spent 25 years as a power plant operator for the City of Austin. In all his years working for the city, only once was he late.
A devoted father, Doug is survived by his son, Thomas Shewalter of Austin, Texas, and his daughter, Pamela Helgerson and her husband Bradley of Temple, Texas. His legacy continues through his five beloved grandchildren: Farah, Neal, Azita, Karen, and MiLove Helgerson. They will forever cherish the memories of their grandfather, who touched their lives in profound ways.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred Shewalter and JaNell (Robbins) Shewalter. His passing leaves a profound void, yet his spirit will live on through the enduring love of his family.
A graveside service honoring Doug's life will be held at Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, Texas, on December 21, 2024, beginning at 10:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to gather to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a passionate man who served his country with honor and loved his family deeply.
